Here you can find some useful information about travelling, etc.

Travelling

Participants should organise their own travel arrangements.

The staring point of the expedition is a camping near Gyula (Remete Farm) just on the opposite side of the River Körös. Here is a map for the exact location (+46° 40' 26.19", +21° 17' 35.29").

You can reach the camping on foot from the railway station of Gyula, the distance is only 3.5 km. You have to leave the city on the Sarkady street, cross the river and turn left.

Organisers will wait for you during Sunday (18th of July) at the railway station of Gyula to help you finding the camping if you fill the arrival info request form (see below).

If you arrive to Budapest (Ferihegy Airport) by plane

You can find several trains from the airport to Gyula. On 18th of July this is the timetable and the details.

You can search for train schedules in English here.

If you arrive by car

You can probably park your car during the week at the closed yard of the camping at Gyula.

Departure

You can departure on 24th of July (Saturday) in the morning. But please take into accont the time which is necessary to reach for example the airport in Budapest.

There are trains from Szarvas (the destination of our trip) to Budapest in this timetable with details.

If it's really necessary, you can depart on 23rd of July in the evening, but the exact time of arrilval to Szarvas is unpredictable, and catching some night train requires deeper examination of the train schedules. We don't recommend this solution.

Arrival info request

We wolud like to help your arrival thus we need to know exactly when and where you are going to arrive.

Please follow this link and fill the questionnaire.

Please fill this form as soon as possible, but not later than 15th of June. Thank you.

Accommodation on your own

If you need accommodation before or after the IREX, check these pages as a starting point:

What to bring?

  • tent
  • sleeping bag
  • appropriate clothing, including:
    • hat
    • raincoat (we'll also paddle in rain if it's necessary)
    • sandals (it's easier to dry than a shoe)
  • plate & glass (plastic or metal), spoon & fork, knife
  • flashlight
  • suncream
  • mosquito repellent (if you don't want to feed billions of mosquitos)
  • personal medicines
  • toilet paper, tooth-brush, etc.
  • For the international night: some special food and drink from your country and a song or short play. It's going to be at the first night.

And what NOT to bring?

  • too much luggage (we'll have only 1 medium sized car for transporting all the stuff of 30 people)
  • mountain boots, iceaxe...

Food

We will provide all the meals during the expedition: we will eat mainly what we have cooked together.

There will be possibility to buy extra food and drink in the villages.

On 18th of July (Sunday) the dinner will be part of the International Night so please bring some special food and drink of your country / region! This will be our dinner therefore please bring enough food for you to eat that night. Of course you will eat the food of the others.

Insurance & student card

However these rivers are calm flat waters (NOT white water) and this is a canoe trip (and NOT rafting) travel insurance is HIGHLY recommended.

If you have student card, please bring it also.

Money

Participation fee: 65 euro which equals about 17700 HUF (1 EUR = 272 HUF at 21.02.2010)

The participation fee should be paid at the beginning of the expedition in EUR or HUF.

If you are unable to buy HUF before your arrival, don't worry, we will exchange your EUR to HUF at the mean exchange rate (which is better to you - and also for us - than the exchange rate of the banks).

We advise you to bring cash (not credit card) because at the riverbank and in the small villages NO bank or ATM machine will be available.
