Education Aims

The basic aim of the training is the preparation for a wide and continuously renewable career in forestry, which is built on acquiring knowledge about the forest community and the environment. Modern forestry training includes the knowledge of several disciplines. We teach our students sciences, ecology, technical subjects and economics on a basic and advanced level.

During their studies, the students acquire skills in forest management, wildlife management, and nature conservation. They will feel committed to the maintenance and improvement of our forest treasures, conforming to the continuously changing demands of society. They will prepare to integrate duties of Hungarian forestry into European and global programs.

The training of the basic forestry course emphasizes practice. Beside practices during semesters, the students also take part in two 4-week practices off campus.

Our aim is to train specialists who are able to put their theory into practice and who have a deep knowledge of theory in order to continue to the second cycle of their training.

At the end of their studies, the students will have suitable communication skills, and foreign language knowledge, and be prepared for continuous further education, life long learning.

Program of Studies

The qualification on the students’ diploma is: Forest Engineer.

Study time: 6 semesters (plus practice)

Training of forest engineers in Sopron has a long tradition. It is famous all over the world. Most of our professors are scientifically qualified. Many of them are internationally known experts. Their work is supplemented by activities of guest professors from various areas of the profession.

Vocational guidance has a long tradition at our faculty. Our students are involved in our departments’ research. They also participate in students’ study circles and professional workshops.

We put special emphasis on foreign language training. Some of our subjects are taught in foreign languages, and we prepare our students to be able to study abroad if they wish.

At the Faculty of Forestry there are five basic courses. Optional subjects give students a view of the other programs of other higher education institutions here and abroad. BSc. courses can be followed by several MSc. courses.

In Sopron you can study in a dynamically developing campus and the infrastructure improvements in the past years serve the modernization of the educational environment and make the students’ life easier. You can do sports, have fun and enjoy your free time in a useful and convenient way.

There is a special forestry uniform and a special greeting, as well as special events organized by students have been part of our student life for centuries. These traditions enrich you, you can form life long friendships, and you will have wonderful memories for your whole life.

Employment Opportunities

Your Forest Engineer diploma enables you to find direct employment. The BSc course trains graduates who can find employment in a variety of occupations. They can:

·        organize forest management activities at state and private forests, implement forest plantations, record basic data of forest planning, recognize threats to the forest, and organize effective protection against them.

·        organize and direct activities in wildlife management

·        manage nature conservation areas, explore and protect natural resources and organize nature conservation work.

They may also be employed by state or private forests, at forest management companies, by forest holders, by hunting societies, national parks and landscape protection areas.

 

Environment Protection Engineering course

Education Aims

Modern environment protection engineer training includes the knowledge of several disciplines of science. We provide our students basic and advanced training in natural science, ecology, technical subjects and economics. The basic aim of our training is to prepare our students for a wide range of environment protection engineering activities:

·        recognizing threats to the environment,

·        planning and directing intervention in preventing or eliminating damage to the environment,

·        decreasing or eliminating harm to the environment,

·        developing low waste management technologies.

The basic course for environment engineering is practice oriented. Beside practices during the semesters, students take part in off campus practical training.

Our aim is to train specialists who are able to put their theory into practice and who have a deep knowledge of theory in order to continue to the second cycle of their training.

At the end of their studies, the students will have suitable communication skills, and foreign language knowledge, and be prepared for continuous life long further education.

Program of Studies

The qualification on the students’ diploma is: Environment Protection Engineer.

Study time: 7 semesters

During your study you will acquire a high level education. Most of our professors are scientifically qualified. Many of them are internationally known experts. Their work is supplemented by activities of guest professors from various areas of the profession.

The education in Sopron emphasizes nature and landscape protection requirements, regional development, and country planning in an environment conscious way, which aids environment impact studies.

At the Faculty of Forestry there are five basic courses. Optional subjects give students a view of the other programs of other higher education institutions here and abroad.

Our students are involved in the research done by our departments and they also participate in students’ study circles and professional workshops.

Nature Conservation course

Education Aims

The basic aim of the training is the preparation for a wide and continuously renewable career in nature conservation, which is built on acquiring knowledge about the forest community and the environment. Modern training of Nature conservation Engineers involves learning several disciplines. We give our students basic and advanced training in sciences, ecology, technical subjects and economics. With their environmental awareness, the Nature Conservation Engineers will be able to:

·        -organise, plan, direct and implement duties of nature conservation

·        -enforce principles and regulations of nature conservation

·        -work in nature conservation, organise nature conservation tourism

·        -prepare to integrate duties of Hungarian nature conservation into European and global programs.

·        state nature conservation institutions, i.e. Nature Conservation Offices, and National Parks,

·        management of forests and water supply authorities,

·        zoos, botanical gardens, game reserves, museums,

·        authorities and institutions for nature conservation.

 

Wildlife Management course

Education Aims

An up to date wildlife manager engineering training involves the knowledge of several disciplines. In accordance with that, our students will receive a basic training of science, ecology, and economics on basic and advanced levels. Our objective is to prepare our students for wide and modern continuously renewing wildlife manager activities and to make them feel a certain commitment to the environment.

Our graduates

·        prepare for the planning, organization, direction and implementation of the duties of game protection and nature conservation,

·        will be committed to the protection and maintenance of game stock as a natural resource, since game management policy must be linked to the continuously changing demands of society,

·        are able to enforce the interests of wildlife management,

·        are capable of developing habitat sites in an ecologically friendly way,

·        have excellent communication skills and foreign language knowledge,

·        solve the problems of Hungarian wildlife management and put them into European and global aspects

·        have the opportunity to continue studying for an MSc. course after completing their BSc.

Program of studies

The qualification on the students’ diploma is: Wildlife Manager Engineer

Study time: 6 semesters (plus practice), In correspondence courses - 8 semesters

During your study you will acquire a high level education Most of our professors are scientifically qualified. Many of them are internationally known experts. Their work is supplemented by activities of guest professors from various areas of the profession.

You can accomplish your wildlife management course on the basis of our contracts with ten different forestry and agricultural joint stock companies and with the Hungarian Society for the Protection of Hunting. In Sopron there is a 1,100 ha. study area at your disposal, the Ferto Game Biology Research Centre, and the Lajta Research House.

At our faculty there is a long tradition of promoting talented students and we also involve our students in the research of the departments.

In the correspondence training, you will have two one-week counselling periods per semester at the campus.

Your Wildlife Manager Engineer diploma will enable you to find direct employment. The BSc course trains graduates who can find employment in a variety of occupations. They can be employed at:

·        joint stock companies working in forestry, wildlife management, forestry and wood industries, agriculture, and hunting, they might have a position of technical manager, main hunter, game breeding expert, or executive for game protection,

·        hunting societies which operate on 82% of the territory of the country, working as the hunter, main hunter, or hunter trainer,

·        OMVK (National Hungarian Chamber for Hunters) and OMVV (Hungarian Society for the Protection of Hunting) in a position of special executive,

·        other organizations dealing with game and fish management and game trade in the position of department head,

·        authorities dealing with hunting and nature conservation, as a supervisor,

·        training institutions at the primary secondary and tertiary levels as a special trainer or researcher,

·        in zoos, game reserves, botanical gardens or other institutions which deal with ex situ conservation.

 

Environment Protection Applied Research course

Education Aims

The basic aim of the education is to train environment researchers whose knowledge of mathematics, information science, earth science, chemistry physics and biology enable them to work in applied environment science.

Our graduates recognize the rules of interaction between the living and non-living environments which determine human life and well being. They are capable of examining and measuring the state of the environment. They have acquired the scientific basis of how to prevent damage to the environment. They are prepared to examine the issues in Hungarian environment science and to deal with them from a European and global perspective.

The training of the basic course for applied environment research is practice oriented. Our students also take part in off campus field studies.

Our aim is to train specialists who are able to put their theory into practice and who have a deep knowledge of theory in order to continue to the second cycle of their training.

At the end of their studies, the students will have suitable communication skills, and foreign language knowledge, and be prepared for continuous further education  and life long learning.

Program of Studies

The qualification on the students’ diploma is: Applied Environment Researcher.

Study time: 6 semesters

During your study you will acquire a high level education. Most of our professors are scientifically qualified. Many of them are internationally known experts. Their work is supplemented by activities of guest professors from various areas of the profession.

Living traditions and the favourable location of the university campus enhance the everyday connection with living and non-living nature, both in the education and in leisure activities.

That is why the training concentrates on applied biology and earth science.
